How to assess LED quality before approving a signage quotation
LED quality is a system decision. A sign depends on the modules, driver, wiring, cabinet, optical materials and installation working together. A quotation that names an LED chip brand but leaves the remaining components unspecified does not provide enough information for a like-for-like technical comparison.
Ask for an identifiable module
Request the manufacturer, model, voltage, power per module, operating conditions and relevant installation instructions. The schedule should make it possible to identify the supplied component later. Review the proposed module spacing and optical arrangement against the sign depth and face material. A shallow letter and a deep lightbox should not be assumed to need the same layout.
Approve the illuminated face
The finished appearance depends on more than the source specification. Acrylic, print density, diffusers, internal surfaces and module position change the light reaching the viewer. Approve a representative illuminated sample using the actual face material, return depth and proposed lighting. Inspect corners, narrow strokes, edges and joints for visible dark areas or hotspots, and assess the sign from its intended viewing distance.
Review the driver and installation conditions
Match the power supply to the module electrical requirements. Constant-voltage and constant-current systems are not interchangeable. Check load limits, cable runs, voltage drop, connection details and the manufacturer’s temperature derating instructions. Record where the driver is installed and how it can be replaced. A component rating does not establish the weather resistance of the complete assembled sign.
Check colour consistency and useful life
For white illumination, agree the intended CCT and ask how colour consistency is controlled between batches and future replacements. Where white light illuminates products or materials, colour rendering may also matter. For an internally lit logo, approve the appearance through the actual face material; a high CRI number alone does not guarantee brand-colour accuracy. Lumen-maintenance information describes light-output retention under stated conditions, not the lifetime of the complete sign.
Request evidence at handover
Keep the approved sample reference, installed component list, circuit or wiring information, dimming settings, access instructions and written warranty schedule. These documents allow a facilities team to service the sign without starting the identification process again. If an alternative component is proposed later, assess its electrical and optical compatibility before accepting it.
Planning illuminated signage? Send Metroplus your drawings, sign dimensions, face material and operating environment. Ask for a technical proposal that explains the lighting arrangement, component schedule, controls and service access for the specific design.
FAQ
Does a longer LED life claim mean a longer sign warranty? No. A performance projection, a component warranty and the signage contractor’s written warranty describe different things. Compare the actual documents rather than treating the numbers as equivalent.
