Should you repair, retrofit or replace an illuminated sign?
An unlit or uneven sign does not always need complete replacement. It may need a local repair, a coordinated lighting retrofit or a new sign if the cabinet, face or mounting has deteriorated. The decision should follow a condition assessment and a clear comparison of scope.
Diagnose the fault first
Record whether the issue affects one section, several letters or the whole sign, and whether it changes with time or weather. A technician should assess the relevant electrical components, connections and physical condition. Replacing visible failed LEDs without investigating the underlying cause can leave the same problem unresolved.
When a local repair may be appropriate
A limited repair may suit an isolated fault when compatible components are available and the remaining installation is in acceptable condition. Review colour and brightness matching: a new module beside aged modules can create a visible difference. Agree whether the repaired area can meet the appearance required by the brand.
When to consider a lighting retrofit
A retrofit can be considered where the structure and face remain serviceable but the internal lighting needs a coordinated update. Review the whole lighting arrangement, including drivers, wiring, thermal conditions, module spacing and access. Confirm whether the proposed change affects controls, power requirements or existing warranty arrangements.
When replacement deserves comparison
Damaged faces, corrosion, water ingress, poor service access or unsuitable mounting may make repeated repair unattractive. Compare a scoped refurbishment with replacement using the same assumptions for access, installation, materials and operating requirements. Do not base the decision only on the price of a replacement module.
Compare costs over an agreed period
Include survey, repair or fabrication, access equipment, downtime, planned maintenance and energy use where these can be reasonably estimated. State operating hours and tariffs when calculating electricity costs. Document uncertainties instead of presenting a universal payback period. A five-year comparison is useful only when both options are priced on the same basis.
For a maintenance assessment, send Metroplus photographs of the sign in daylight and when illuminated, the installation location and height, any known component records and a description of the fault. Existing drawings and service history can make the assessment more efficient. This complements our existing maintenance service rather than replacing it.
FAQ
Can new LEDs be fitted to any old sign? Compatibility and condition must be assessed first.
Can a retrofit guarantee identical brightness to a new sign? The result depends on the retained face, optical layout and components; approve the intended outcome through an appropriate sample or test.
Considering a retrofit for your building? Request a technical signage review and get written feedback on retrofit feasibility, illumination options, and budget range before committing.
