Specifying tunable white for signage and branded interiors
Tunable white allows the white-light appearance to be adjusted across a defined CCT range. It can be useful where illuminated branding must work with changing interior-lighting scenes, but it requires a coordinated choice of LED channels, drivers, controls and commissioning settings.
Decide whether adjustment is needed
A fixed white source may be suitable when the interior lighting and design intent remain constant. Tunable white is worth discussing when the project calls for different white-light scenes or adjustment during commissioning. State the practical reason for the feature before adding control complexity, and avoid promising health or wellbeing benefits without evidence relevant to the actual application.
Define the range and the sample
Specify the required CCT range and the intended normal setting rather than asking simply for “tunable LEDs”. Assess samples at the warm end, cool end and intermediate settings using the final face material. Check whether output changes across the range and whether the installation remains visually consistent between letters or panels.
Coordinate controls early
A common tunable-white arrangement uses warm-white and cool-white channels. Its control gear must support the chosen load and control method. DALI DT8 includes a Tc colour type for correlated colour-temperature control; other DALI colour types serve other purposes. The term DT8 alone should not replace checking the exact product capability, certification, controller support and proposed wiring.
Write a scene and responsibility schedule
Record each sign or lighting zone, the desired CCT settings, output levels, scheduling needs and the party responsible for programming. Confirm the behaviour when power returns, when a control signal is lost and when a local override is used. Clarify the interface between the signage contractor, electrical contractor and lighting-controls integrator before installation.
Make future servicing possible
Preserve the driver and controller model references, wiring information, addressing records where relevant and the commissioning settings. A replacement part must match more than the physical size: voltage or current requirements, control features and colour behaviour need review. Keep access to these components practical within the completed joinery or sign enclosure.
For a luxury retail or residential interior, share the lighting scene schedule with Metroplus at the design stage. Ask the team to review the proposed signage or bespoke lighting against the intended white-light appearance and service-access requirements. See also our guide comparing RGB and RGBW LED signage.
FAQ
Is RGBW the same as tunable white? No. RGBW adds a white channel to red, green and blue. Adjustable warm-to-cool white generally needs suitable white channels and controls; the product must explicitly support the required range.
Can the sign connect to existing controls? This requires a compatibility review of the actual system, not an assumption based on the protocol name.
